August 2004. The African American Alliance (AAA) announces the honorees of the first annual Freedom Awards Banquet. The Freedom Awards will be held at the Newnan Country Club on Friday, August 27 at 7:00pm. The country club is excited to host the first event ever presented by an African American organization. Congressman John Lewis, who is among the inaugural list of honorees, will be signing his book, Walking with the Wind: A Memoir of the Movement, during the reception and banquet. There will be five award categories that cover the tenets which represent the core values and mission statement of AAA.

Here is a list of the awards and this year’s winners who also will be in attendance to accept their award:
The Robert Welcome "Papa" Sutton Lifetime Achievement Award - The Honorable Congressman John Lewis

The Legacy Award - The Tuskegee Airmen

The Torch Award - State Representative Lynn Smith

The Light Award - United We Stand

The Ministry Award will be awarded on Sunday, August 29 to Newnan Chapel Church, which is the oldest African American Church in Newnan, during their 11:00 am service.

Tickets for this semi-formal event are $50.00 per person and $350.00 per table for eight people. Churches, organizations and other groups are encouraged to purchase tables and receive a special recognition during the awards ceremony.

An elegant evening of entertainment is planned including a full course meal and live jazz band. The event kicks off a weekend long celebration that will include the Freedom Day festival on Saturday, August 28 at the Central Education Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Newnan and will culminate during the 11:00 am worship service at Newnan Chapel Church on Sunday, August 29.
