Do You RV?

According to a Michigan study, approximately 7.2 million RVs are on the nation's roads. RVIA (Recreation Vehicle Industry Association) estimates nationwide there are as many as 30 million RV enthusiasts, including RV renters.

More RVs are now owned by baby boomers (35-54 year olds) than any other group. This is also the fastest growing segment of the RV market. I can attest to that, as my husband and I are among that group, along with many friends and family members.

We bought our first travel trailer in 2001. A small 25' Wilderness with no slide-out. We soon realized that we needed more space and traded for a 31' Prowler LS with a large slide-out. We love having room to move around. We keep it fully stocked with everything except perishables so we're ready to go when the mood strikes.

RVing is a great way to travel as a family. I recently read that RVing families say "it fosters an increased sense of togetherness and helps improve family communication." I definitely agree! Even though my boys have the TV, Xbox, DVDs, etc. when we travel, there is much more family time and fewer distractions.

With reportedly more than 16,000 public and privately owned campgrounds nationwide, RVers are able to find a place that suits their needs for a weekend or months at a time. While the number of luxury RV resorts with tennis courts, health spas and golf courses are increasing and sought by many ... that's just not for me. Of course, if you asked my husband, he would love the amenity of a golf course! But let's not ask him! :-) Personally, I love the quiet solitude of the places that are off the beaten path.

Many times during the summer, the boys and I take off for a long weekend or sometimes a week ... leaving dear old Dad at home. But hey, somebody has to work for a living! Don't feel too sorry for him though. He recently took the trailer to the NASCAR races at the Texas Motor Speedway for four days of "male bonding" (ugh!).

For all you women out there that hesitate to RV without "a man". Just go for it! Even when my husband is along, I drive and pull the trailer. Yes, I even back it into designated areas. A good site for women is www.rvingwomen.org

If you are considering the purchase of an RV, I suggest that you research extensively before making a decision. With so many choices, it can be a bit overwhelming. It is also a good idea to consider renting before you buy to get a feel for what personally works for you. A nice starting place with lots of information is www.gorving.com

According to the University of Michigan, demographic trends favor substantial RV market growth. The number of RV-owning households is projected to rise to nearly 8 million in 2010. A gain of 15 percent between 2001 and 2010 which is higher than the overall U.S. household growth of 10 percent.

If you are among the millions of RVers out there, I would love to hear your story and see pictures of your travels. CLICK HERE to get started on your own RVing page!
